Holiday Season Craft Show held in Santa Rosa, CA on November 11, 2006

It was a beautiful day for a craft show and we are all thrilled to report that it went very well. So this craft show has become our “First Annual”. Some of the crafters gave these comments:

“I loved the entire day at our craft show. The food was excellent and the turnout was marvelous. It seemed like we had somebody constantly looking through the stuff at our table.”

“I really enjoyed talking with everyone. The company was the best, the food

was good and the whole thing was just great! It was an honor to sell a print to another artist.

Talking with fellow artists Lorraine and Rick was a highlight for me.”

Enjoy the brief tour through our show:

Kathy, far left, with her adorable display of crocheted animals.

Marie’s beautiful Sonoma County landscapes in oil and prints.

Wilma’s table was full of delightful ceramics, floral and Christmas arrangements, gift items and much more.

Rick’s, far left, display of black and white framed photos was stunning.

Lorraine, far right, showed a variety of beautiful oils, watercolor and prints.

Betty, far left, and her dazzling display of handmade baby items, tea towels, handbags, scarves, and oh so much more.

Joan, in the pink hat, was in the kitchen brewing up delicious refreshments for our visitors and artisans all day long.

While upstairs, Tiffany, insert, displayed her attractive and well-designed previously worn, jean book bags.

Lissa’s unique and distinctive restored dolls guaranteed to warm every little girl’s heart.

Hope to see you next year on Saturday, November 10, 2007, for the 2nd Annual Holiday Season Craft Show.

Born in November

It is time to get gifts for the November birthday girls.

Topaz is the birthstone for November. It's lively fire, clarity and beautiful colors and hardness are why it is used for jewelry. Pure topaz, when brilliantly cut can be often mistaken as diamond. Because of its rarity, topaz is an expensive gem. The most valued and rarest color is red. Imperial topaz -- sherry colored varieties of brownish-yellow, orangish yellow and reddish brown -- are the most popular topaz stones and command high prices, as do pink colored stones. Light blue and pale yellow topaz are of less value, but are nevertheless stunning in beauty.

Citrine is the alternate birthstone. Citrine is the lovely yellowish gem belonging to the quartz species. Quartz is found in several localities and comes in a wide range of colors. Citrine is one of the most appealing and desirable yellowish gems, because it is readily available and modestly priced. Citrine includes yellow to gold to orange brown shades of transparent quartz. Sunny and affordable, citrine can brighten almost any jewelry style, blending especially well with the yellow gleam of polished gold.

Visit Eleworth to choose that special gift for the special November girl.

Jade - Fake or Real?

There are 2 types of Jade - nephrite(soft) and jadeite(hard). Nephrite is the more common jade (cheaper and more prevalent). To tell the difference between the two, all you have to do is to get a specific gravity measurement, that is a ratio between how much the stone weighs in air versus in water. Jadeite is 3.33 and Nephrite is 2.95.

Many inexpensive jade pieces are made from poor quality stone that may have been dyed or color-enhanced to look more appealing. Others are not made from jade at all, but from synthetic resin that have been colored to look like jade. There are all kinds of ways to tell whether a jade is real or fake. Here are some:

  • Go to a jeweler and get it appraised. Even better if you know or used the jeweler in the past because you can trust the person.
  • Another way is to hit a pawn shop and tell you want to hit a few bucks. They have testing of gems to tell whether the gems are genuine or fake.
  • Hold the stone in your hand. If it feels cool, it is real.
  • Observe the texture of the material. If there is a fracture, the texture should be splintery and rough. If it shows fairly smooth flat surfaces and "faults" (cleavage planes), you may have another type of green stone, for example Amazonite. If it is polished, does it look like it has a "dimpled" skin? Can you see tiny veining on the surface? If it is translucent, does the material look slightly fibrous? Jadeite tends to have brighter hues and a shinier polish than nephrite, which is more muted in color and subdued in luster.
These are just some ways you can try to find out whether your jade is real. The gem laboratory will definitely give you the correct and accurate results.

The Making of Wire Pendant

One of the comments received by Eleworth at MySpace was "I love your wire pendants. They are VERY cool!!! How do you do all that delicate work?"

Donna Mae, the person behind this lovely elegant jewelry gladly gave a brief description on how she made the pendant. "Wire sculpted pendants are made with Sterling Silver or 14K gold-filled wire, 20-21 ga., dead soft wire. Several wires are used to sculpt into twirls and loops and designs. The design work is done by hand without tools. There was a learning curve in bending the wires smoothly. The more I do it, the more the design ideas seem to flow."

Born in June

The Birthstones for June are Pearl, Alexandrite and Moonstone, symbols of Health and Longevity. Pearl is the traditional gift for the 30th wedding anniversary, as well as, the modern gift for the 12th and 80th wedding anniversaries.

Scientifically, this is how a Pearl is created. When an irritant, such as a small parasite or a fish lodges in the flesh of an oyster, mussel, or clam, a protective substance called "nacre" is produced. Over years, layer upon layer of shimmering nacre coats the intruder, creating a lustrous pearl. Natural pearls are relatively rare, so a process evolved in which a piece of shell or bead was placed inside a mollusk to stimulate the production of nacre. This results in a cultured pearl, which accounts for about 90 per cent of the pearl industry.

Jewelry designers are having a heyday, creating sexy, playful jewelry that’s trendy and casual enough for a summer day on our table today.

When shopping for Pearl, luster and size are important. Luster is the shine factor. You should almost see a rainbow of colors coming off top. You would not be able to see the luster but it definitely shines. The bigger the pearl, the bigger the price-tag. Just 1 mm can up a pearl’s price 100 per cent.

Find Pearl jewelry at Eleworth. Suprise your loved ones on their June birthday.

Earrings as Art

We like to decorate our ears. Try to forget that you had your ears pierced in a mall just as soon as you could talk your mother into letting you do it. Try to forget that you have given away as gifts more earrings than there are margaritas in Cabo. Consider from the perspective of an alien visiting our planet for the first time:

"They decorate their auditory recepticals with small bits of shiny metal and colorful rocks."

In our fast-paced modern cultures our ears provide one of the easiest and most prominent body parts to adorn. We express ourselves, our moods, our attitudes through the jewelry we afix to our ears.

Earrings have been around forever. Well, ok, as near as we can tell, a really really long time. The oldest known earrings are the Lunate earrings. The Lunate earrings were excavated in Ur in Mesopotamia, what is now Iraq (of all places). These gold crescent hoops are approximately 4,500 years old. The earliest designs of earrings were hoops and pendants made of precious metals, most commonly gold, and sometimes bone.

The popularity of earrings rose and fell throughout the ages in direct relation to hairstyles. For example, the adornment of our ears fell out of favor during the Middle Ages. It was considered immoral for respectable married women to be seen in public with their heads uncovered. Then in the mid-1500's women began wearing their hair up, exposing their ears. Earrings resurged.

Today earrings thrive with as many different variations as there are people wearing them. We wear danglies of all sorts, hoops and posts and spirals and swirlies, made from all kinds of materials including silver and gold and sea shells, pearls and gems and glass beads. We wear earrings as art.

Jewelry Care - How to care for Pearls?

Long known as the "Queen of Gems," pearls possess a history and allure far beyond what today's wearer may recognize. Throughout much of recorded history, a natural pearl necklace comprised of matched spheres was a treasure of almost incomparable value, in fact the most expensive jewelry in the world. Now we see pearls almost as accessories, relatively inexpensive decorations to accompany more costly gemstones.

Pearls are fragile and softer than other gemstones. That is why it is important that you care for your pearls so that they remain bright and beautiful for a long time. Below are some suggestions:
  1. After wearing your pearls, make a habit of wiping the pearls with a soft damp cloth. This is remove any build-up o the pearls.
  2. From time to time, wash the pearls with mild soap. Once finished, gently rinse and place on soft towel or cloth to dry. Do not hang pearls to dry as this may stretch the silk thread.
  3. Store the pearls in a soft material box, pouch or bag. Do not store pearls in plastic bags as they will dry out and crack over time.
  4. Store pearls separately from your other jewelry. Pearls are easily be scratched or damaged because they are softer than other gems or stones.
  5. Before doing housework, take off your pearls. The chemicals from the detergent can damage the pearls.
  6. Wear your pearls after putting on makeup, perfume and hairspray. The chemicals from these products can dull the pearl's luster.

Jewelry Care - Clean your new jewelry

Owning a jewelry includes caring for it. When you purchase a jewelry, clean it before wearing. Especially if it is a body jewelry. There are all kinds of ways to clean your jewelry:
  1. Use anti-bacterial soap and rinse off well with warm or hot water.
  2. Some jewelry stores provide pre-injected swaps (Steret) when you buy jewelry from them. You can clean with those. However, some believed that they are not as effective.
  3. If you wear contact lense, you can use the saline solution to clean the jewelry. Soak it in saline for a couple of hours and wash with soap for extra cleanliness.
  4. To remove lightdirt and fingerprints, use a small amount of mild liquid detergent to a 1/2 cup of warm water and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Dry it completely before storing. Then polish it up with a soft cotton cloth.
These are just general ways to clean your jewelry. For more detail information on cleaning jewelry with pearls and crystals, tune in!

Your Own MedicAlert Jewelry

Do you want to wear a MedicAlert that is different from anyone else? Do you want to be able to wear your MedicAlert everywhere and everytime? Do you want to show off how special your MedicAlert is? Well this is your chance!

I wear a MedicAlert and I used to take them off whenever I go to a party or a function. I did that because it did not go along with my clothings. It was just so difficult to match. At one point I just left it aside and ended up losing it.

I had to reorder and this time Donna Mae custom-made me a bracelet for my MedicAlert. I love it! I now wear my MedicAlert all the time. I am planning to make a couple more to go with all my clothings.

Good news to the rest of you, Eleworth is going to offer a collection of bracelets specially for MedicAlerts. If you cannot wait, email me and I might be able to help out.

What do February and purple have in common?

AMETHYST! That's what I am talking about.

Are you born in February? If yes, Amethyst is your birthstone. Amethyst is a semi-precious stone that typically is violet or purple in color. This stone though a birthstone for February born Aquarian can also benefit Sagittarius as well as the Piscean as they are the people always going through highs and low with there emotions. This gemstone ranges from the light purple to dark and is said to bring luck and intelligence to the wearer.

Since the color of amethyst is associated with royalty, it has been the natural choice for most monarchs from ancient times. Egyptian rulers had a marked preference for the stone. Some exquisite amethyst stones adorn the British Crown Jewels. Amethyst is found in many different locations around the world and has become a very popular stone. Amethyst is said to bring tolerance and a calmness to its wearer. It also is supposed to evade drunkenness according to the Greek mythology.

Amethyst is such a beauty that anybody can wear it, even if it's not your birthstone you can still have it in your jewelry. Want to benefit from Amethyst? The latest set of jewelry from Eleworth offers a beautiful Amethyst necklace and matching Amethyst earrings.
